Counting my near death experiences in no particular order – #1 – On the High Seas

My father was in the Marine Corps and was stationed in Japan after WWII. We were able to live there with him for about two years. Eventually we had to come back to the States. My brother Robert and I were just kids when we made a trip to America from Japan with our Mum on a freighter ship, not a passenger ship.  The ship encountered a storm on this particular trip.   We decided to go on deck during the storm and sit on the deck chairs.   Of course, we didn’t tell Mum or anyone of our plan.  It was fun for a while, but then the deck chairs started to slide as the ship rolled.   When our chairs started to slide towards the edge of the deck all that was keeping us from going overboard was that chain.   A sailor had gone on deck for whatever reason (maybe we had been reported missing by Mum) and caught us just as they were about to go overboard.
