Counting near death experiences in no particular order -#4 Hanging from an eleven-story building

I worked construction during high school and college summers building swimming pools with a Gunite rig. Once we were building a pool on the rooftop of an eleven-story building. We had to haul the Gunite hose up the outside of the building with a rope.  There were four of us trying to pull it up onto the rooftop, but gravity was winning.  One of the workers had wrapped the rope around what he thought was a well-anchored pipe and walked away. The pipe wasn’t a very reliable anchor and the rope started slipping. Next thing we knew we were being pulled to the edge of the roof. My arm got caught in the rope and I couldn’t let go. Then we were dangling over the edge grasping the rope for dear life. I thought I was a goner but somehow we held on until the firemen got to the roof and were able to rescue us, pulling us back up onto the roof. I’ve had acrophobia ever since.
